Apr. 30th, 2009 01:30 pmJust got up after a night of celebration (Queen's Night, or, Excuse To Drink Copious Amounts of Alcohol) to find that the celebrations of the day (Queen's Day, a national holiday with lost of celebrating, eating, games and, again, drinking) has been roughly interrupted.
Seems like a car has almost crashed into the royal family's bus, and instead drove straight through the watching audience and crashed. Many of the celebrations have been cancelled - looks like there might be 12 people injured and 2 dead.
Just wondering what was the cause? Was the guy crazy, drugged/drunk, or was it a tragic accident (like maybe he had a heart-attack)? They pulled the guy out alive, so we'll find out. It seems likely to be a crazy (you have to be, right), but imagine if it happens because you are experience some sort of health crisis - 2 people dead...
People are wondering if we can still go out and have our holiday in our own towns, or if that is in really bad taste. The mood is very subdued. I don't care about the royal family at all (I think it's about time for Holland to become a republic), but our holiday is an excuse to be happy together, so it's a tragedy. I also feel sorry of all the people (in Apeldoorn) who worked so hard to make this day a succes only to have it end this way and this early. No one is going to remember their effort and hard work.
ETA: Looks like everything is getting cancelled.
ETA: 8 people died. Most events got cancelled. Turns out the man who drove the car did it on purpose. Ass.
