Friday I saw Pirates: At World's End. I was disappointed.

Eh, the ending sucked! Was this supposed to be a happy/satisfying ending? What's Elisabeth-Sue going to do for the rest of her life? Be pirate king while she waits for the one day in 10 years that she can see Will? How long will she live - maybe fifty more years if she's lucky? - so that's like five days they'll have together for the rest of their lives. Then Will will live forever after as Charon the ferryman, utterly alone. Oh joy.

Look, I digged that Jack was humourously right back into the circle of "reclaiming the Pearl, losing the Pearl", but wouldn't it have been a better ending if he'd taken Davy Jones' place instead of Will? That would have been poetic justice, and it would have given him the importance that he gives himself in his little meta in the afterlife (everything in Jack's mind revolves around Jack). He would never die, which he really didn't want to after his first experience, and the world would keep Captain Jack forever. The viewer could have had a sense of happily ever after with Will/Elisabeth, which this sort of film (comic action/adventure romance) deserves, even if it is a cliche (the entire movie except for Jack is a cliche!). Now, I was left with raised eyebrows and a sense of "eh" at the disappointing end.

The rest of the film wasn't that great either (could the whole Calypso plotline be anymore useless? What about the entire British fleet turning around because the vastly outnumbered pirate ships shot just a single one of them to hell - one that had like 200 canons that didn't fire a single time).

Even Keith Richards wasn't funny.

What a shame.

I was mostly confused and then started to shut my eyes a few times during the last hour of the movie. :(
