Just saw The X-files: I Want to Believe

It's okay: I thought it was going to be awful, but I quite liked it, though it was pretty heavy-handed and lacked some humor. It leaves me wanting more, but I fear that this movie will not bring in the numbers that it should to make that happen. Seeing Mulder and Scully again was like coming home. I lived with them for years, and it was good to see them again.

The movie is quite sinister and introspective, which is captivating on first viewing, but does not invite for a rewatch. Since I got the plot and evolvement, it's not one of those complex or particularly character-driven plots that makes me come back again and again; with which I think the filmmakers might have done themselves a disservice. An X-files movie would score best by repeated visits from fans, I'd say. However, the friend who went with me is far from an X-phile - she's perhaps seen a handful of episodes years ago - and she had no trouble with the story, which differs this movie from the previous one which was so very mythology heavy (but which I love despite its chaos and which I have come back to several times).

I thought the Scully side of the film was too heavy-handed and way too unrelated to either the plot or the X-files an sich. But then I never was a big fan of the religiously-centred eps. I was glad she chose the possible stemcell cure over resignation to fate though. She fights a good fight.

I didn't like how Scully turned against their life's work. They both lost so much, how can she leave it behind? What about her career in the bureau? Didn't she want to be an agent over a doctor? She chose (forensic) pathology as her specialty, right? And it was the work that made Mulder so brilliant, so driven, how can she turn from him when he's awakened? What does he do now he's no longer FBI? Do we know what his current employment is (besides tossing pencils at the ceiling? Lol!)? Guess I always enjoyed out-there, out-cast, rebel Mulder and his basement. Wish he could have stayed there. But I guess I get why he couldn't, and certainly why she couldn't.

I lost track of X-files at the end, after Duchovny left - did we find out what happened to baby William? I guess it is a mystery how they lost him.

I liked the controversy of the pedophile, psychic father (his confrontation with Scully was great). I was shocked when Agent Dakota was pushed off the building (sad!). I thought the horror of the girl in the box was palpable. Was really happy when Mulder got rid of the beard (though laughed at Scully's "scratchy beard!" ^_^).

Oh yeah! Mmmmm Mulder!Torture. Knew that Carter wouldn't let me down (he knows the fangirls). When Mulder hared after that truck alone, I sighed, "Oh, Mulder."

So much love for when Skinner turned up. Love love. Skinner hugging Mulder, Mulder going "Skinner? Cold." Awwww, too cute. (Wished he'd said "Skin-Man?" though :)).

So, basically, the movie is a case-file. The whole stealing organs by kidnapping random women-transplanting whole bodyparts-curing lung cancer by putting your head on a girl's body wasn't really explained, which is sorta par of the course (though I feel there might have been a bit more conclusion on that account - maybe Scully typing it into a report!). A case-file that makes me wanting more case-files. More X-files. I want to see Mulder get involved again. I want Scully to find fulfillment in it, and resolution. I want them to come out on top.

But I guess they are on top in one respect. They are together, and that makes me very happy. Mulder and Scully are soulmates: touch-stones, their one in a billion, and I could never see them (best friends, partners, joined by trust, history, loyalty and love), especially Mulder, be able to build that kind of relationship with anyone else, not after everything they've been through and shared. Since I like them to have someone, and can't see them with anyone else (nor want to), I'm happy they have each other. I for one am very satisfied by the Mulder/Scully. They deserve each other.

And that makes me like the movie. But I doubt I'll ever see it again. I'll see a new one though, so I hope a new one will get made.

But I kinda doubt it.

ETA: The end-credits left my friend and I, and many of the other viewers, strangely captivated. Very artistically done. Loved the wave up from the boat by Mulder/Duchovny and Scully/Anderson.
