I saw Serenity for the first time last night.
I was expecting much of it. It's been hyped on various friends' pages and by a close RL friend. It has many, ardent fans. Plus it's Joss Whedon.
Still though, this movie didn't do too much for me. The characters didn't really speak beyond their stereotype. It took some time to get into the plot, especially since the beginning was so introductory (with the good guys, everybody fit into "the type") and wooden (which is how the supposed bad guy came across). I felt like Mal was a modern day Han Solo (there were too many similarities not to bring it to mind). The love plot didn't speak to me either (but then Inara was hardly in the movie and looked too fabricated a beauty to be for real).
The characters I found most interesting were the brother and sister, though I think they weren't actually in the series, so that's just...
It wasn't bad, however. I thought the scenes with the Reavers were powerful, esp. their origins and the time spent on that dead, white planet. This movie makes me feel like I would have liked it better if I'd watched the series. Probably I'll get them from my friend and have a better look. Much was lost to me for not having seen it. I bet the deaths would've had more sting, and the pairings more depth.
I hope anyway.
This thing can't have grown into a cult phenomenon for nothing right?
Next up is Howl's Moving Castle
